Who’s Bad, the ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band, performed Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. Who’s Bad put on a great show, allowing the audience to hop on stage and sing along with MJ, or at least as close as we’re ever going to get. Singing all of his greatest hits, from Thriller to ABC, we were able to remember to King of Pop […]
Tomorrow night UGA Relay for Life is holding a benefit concert at the Georgia Theater, and it’s going to rock. Gringo Star is opening for local Athens band Dead Confederate, and doors open at 8pm. It’ll be a alternative country, psychedelic rock-and-grunge show, and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society and UGA Relay for Life to help fund cancer research. With the onslaught of lineups released in the past few days, if music is what you are looking for this summer there will be no issues finding a festival catered to your liking. Festival season has kicked into high gear, and it seems as if these gatherings are popping up everywhere. With festivals of all sizes coming out of the woodwork, here are some potential highlights from what will certainly be an exciting summer […]
Even though the band claims its roots in Athens, Georgia, Atlanta is still kind of a hectic homecoming for Futurebirds. When I was talking to ToJo Dojo a.k.a. Thomas Johnson in the ballroom lobby of the Buckhead Theatre, we could barely get five words into a conversation before an old friend or family member would spot the distinguishingly bearded guitarist, stop, chat, and beam with holiday spirit and pride for the progress of the […]
The interesting thing about the music business is that most of it isn’t even about music. Graphic designers are an important part of marketing an album. I went to Wuxtry Records in downtown Athens to pick out an album based solely on the cover art to see how the music compared.
Album: The Blythe Archives, Volume One
Artist: Emperor X
This album sleeve caught my eye. It was a depiction of a face created in ASCII […]
Gallery: Alex Grey
Thursday night, psychedelic artist Alex Grey and his wife Allyson held an art show at New Earth.
They signed books and held a talk while live art was being created all over the place. Inside and outside, cubist and realistic art was being combined, not to mention, an entirely different realm of whimsy.
A woman was being airbrushed, a huge butterfly appeared on the wall, and Alex Grey talked about his spiritual LSD trips […]

There Can Be Only One
For the second time in as many years, Cass McCombs graced the stage of East Atlanta’s premier venue, the EARL. It was not the packed, sweaty Thursday night of 2012. It was a sparse room, maybe 80 people, who had braved their way to the club on a drizzling Monday night.
The band took the stage in a mild-mannered form that has become somewhat of a signature for the […]

With the release of his fifth studio album, it is obvious that Brett Dennen has come a long way in his music career.
When one thinks of Brett Dennen, the popular single “Ain’t No Reason” comes to mind. This song exemplifies the classic mellow folk tune that listeners of Dennen are used to. In Smoke and Mirrors though, Brett moves away from this mellow folk feel to a more upbeat, faster paced album, […]
There have been plenty of original sounds to come out of Athens, Georgia but few have been able to create as unique of a sound as New Madrid. As the band prepares to release their sophomore effort, titled SUNSWIMMER, on February 25th via Normaltown Records, they have become well accustomed to creating a unique blend of fuzz and southern psychedelic rock. The first single from the new album, Manners, is no different. Featuring plenty […]
We sent six questions to the guys of Universal Sigh; here’s what they had to say in response in this Consume Media Quicky.
Steve: Beatles for suuuuure.
Steve: In playing guitar I try to imitate Trey Anastasio’s effortless phrasing, but ultimately when performing live the only people influencing my playing are the four other members of the band and the energy of the crowd.
Jones: Mitch Mitchell and Jon Bonham (c’mon, you’re not […]
